This week has already gotten a bit away from me, but I wanted to add a bit of my two sense before class!
I continue to be amazed at just how graphic this work is. I think that it is certainly the most graphic Latin work that I have read in Latin, with the exception perhaps of the (we'll call it) "bowel aggravation" from Apuleius' Asinus Aureus (gross but embarrassingly enough one of my favorites :/ ). Naturally, as has been mentioned before by many of you, the Homeric connections are blatant. I do also find, however, that some of the most difficult passages for me to translate are the particularly graphic ones, such as the scene where the Virtus slams her sword into the brain (helmet?) of her foe and the following lines. This is certainly not what I was expecting when we switched over to Christian literature, but it is enjoyable (and challenging) nevertheless.
